Conadeh urges Honduras to assist citizen deported to Africa

The National Commissioner for Human Rights (Conadeh) has urged the Honduran government to immediately activate consular assistance protocols for Brayan Sánchez, a Honduran national deported from the United States to the Central African Republic.

Sánchez was deported on July 30 to Bangui, along with four Cuban nationals and an Ecuadorian citizen. Reports indicate that the group was moved without prior notice and currently fears for their safety, receiving assistance only from alleged UN officials.

Elsy Reyes, coordinator of Conadeh’s Human Mobility Defense, stated that the transfer to a third country without the individual's consent or language proficiency constitutes a violation of due process. She emphasized that the Honduran state must verify Sánchez’s physical condition, meet his urgent basic needs, and provide a passport to facilitate international movement if necessary. Reyes also noted that existing cooperation agreements between Honduras and the United States regarding asylum and refuge specify that only Spanish-speaking individuals should be transferred.
