CONAFE and AFNA host Holstein cattle genetic workshop in Navarre
CONAFE and the Friesian Association of Navarre (AFNA) hosted a technical workshop at the Unión Montaribe livestock farm in Cortes, Navarre, focused on the morphological assessment and genetic improvement of Holstein dairy cattle.
The training session, attended by 14 technical professionals, combined theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on evaluation of live animals. Participants analyzed the 25 linear descriptive traits used in official Holstein classification and studied how specific body regions contribute to an animal’s functional score and overall genetic index.
The workshop also addressed methods for correcting structural flaws through genetic selection. CONAFE presented tools such as Sinbad and various mating programs to optimize breeding, while AFNA introduced a new genetic advisory service developed in collaboration with the Navarrese Institute of Agri-Food Technologies and Infrastructures (INTIA).
