Conagua invests $48 million in Tabasco irrigation upgrade and uncovers illegal water taps in Tamaulipas

The National Water Commission (Conagua) began a major rehabilitation project in the La Chontalpa district of Tabasco, allocating more than 48 million pesos from federal funds. The work will clean and desilt 39.25 km of drainage channels, improve water flow, reduce flood risk and benefit roughly 447 ha of cultivated land in the municipalities of Cárdenas and Huimanguillo.

In a separate operation in Tamaulipas, Conagua inspectors identified over 40 possible clandestine water intakes along the Guayalejo‑Tamesí river, which supplies drinking water to the southern part of the state. Director Jaime Felipe Cano Pérez said the inspections, coordinated with state authorities, will continue through mid‑August and may expand to the Purificación and Corona rivers. The agency warned that illegal extractions breach the National Water Law and can lead to economic sanctions.
