Conagua recovers 5 billion cubic meters of water in Mexico

Mexico's National Water Commission (Conagua) has recovered 5 billion cubic meters of water through the implementation of the new National Water Law. Efraín Morales, Director of Conagua, stated that this volume is equivalent to the annual water supply required for 90 million people.

The recovery process involves reordering water concessions to prioritize human consumption and small-scale users over private interests. As part of this redistribution, the government has issued 12,346 water concession titles to municipalities, small and medium-sized producers, and local communities.

According to official reports, the recovered volume includes voluntary returns. Under the National Agreement for the Human Right to Water and Sustainability, irrigation districts and units have committed to returning 2.8 billion cubic meters, while industrial users have offered 126 million cubic meters. The government also attributes the recovery to the detection of unused concessions and the correction of irregularities within the Public Registry of Water Rights.
