Conakry authorities begin dismantling buildings near Ahmed Sékou Touré Airport

Authorities in Conakry have begun a dismantling operation on buildings overlooking the Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport in the Gbessia area. On Monday, September 14, 2026, security forces, including military engineers and gendarmes from the Ministry of Urbanism and Housing, were deployed to oversee the process.

Currently, the operation involves the removal of rooftops from targeted structures. It remains unclear whether the buildings will face full demolition or if the intervention will be limited to specific levels. Residents and property owners were notified on Sunday evening to vacate the premises.

While official motives have not been formally detailed, local residents reported being told the measures are necessary for ‘state security.’ Some affected property owners, who have occupied the area for decades, have expressed a willingness to comply but are seeking compensation for their losses.
