Conakry authorities launch crackdown on shisha sales
Authorities in Conakry have launched a crackdown on the sale and consumption of shisha to protect public health. Following instructions from Prosecutor General Falilou Doumbouya, the Office central anti-drogue (OCAD) conducted operations targeting establishments associated with shisha use in several neighborhoods of the capital.
During these interventions, OCAD reported the seizure of 1,309 cartons of shisha charcoal and 168 accessories. Officials also presented various other substances, including tramadol, beer, and certain medications. OCAD Director General Abdoulaye Sangaré stated that the strategy focuses on targeting the venues that provide shisha and their suppliers to reduce overall access, rather than focusing solely on individual consumers.
The initiative has received support from the civic association ‘Génération Sans Tabac’, which has long advocated for government measures to curb tobacco and shisha consumption due to its health risks. Officials have called on political and religious leaders to assist in raising awareness to prevent health issues, particularly among the youth.
