Conakry Central Prison demolition begins for urban redevelopment

Demolition of the Conakry Central Prison began on Saturday, August 22, following the transfer of inmates to other correctional facilities across Guinea. The facility, which was originally built in 1933 to hold 300 people, had recently been housing approximately 2,000 detainees.

Mohamed Lamine Sy Savané, the Minister of Urbanism, Housing, and Land Management, supervised the start of the works. He stated that the demolition is part of a broader initiative to modernize the capital and provide a new face for Conakry. The site is intended to be repurposed for new housing and various infrastructure projects as part of the Simandou 2040 program.

The Minister urged local residents to stay away from the construction site to ensure safety and avoid incidents during the process. He noted that the operation is being conducted in coordination with the police, civil protection, and the Ministry of Justice.
