Conakry contract teachers announce strike over civil service integration
Contract teachers in the Conakry special zone have announced an immediate walkout from public schools, accusing education unions of betrayal. The protesters are demanding the implementation of a protocol agreement signed on January 3, 2026, specifically regarding the integration of contract workers into the civil service through classroom practice examinations.
General coordinator Mohamed Latige Ibrahim stated that the issue has been neglected by the inter-union leadership, which includes the FSPE, SNE, and SLEEG. The teachers are calling for a suspension of classes until their demands are met, noting that many have been in this uncertain professional state since 2018.
The movement has directly appealed to President Mamadi Doumbouya and Prime Minister Bah Oury to intervene, questioning why contract teachers in Conakry have not been regularized while others have. The strike follows recent internal tensions and verbal altercations within the broader education union movement.
