Conakry power outages caused by substation fire

A fire at the Lansanaya-Barrage electrical substation caused widespread power outages across several districts in Conakry, Guinea. The incident occurred around midnight following an accident in which a construction truck struck a major power line in Bailobaya. The impact of the collision was felt at a junction box located at the Lansanaya substation, triggering the fire.

Electricité de Guinée (EDG) reported that the fire was brought under control within approximately one hour without the need for firefighters. The resulting blackout has affected multiple sectors, including the communes of Tombolia, Matoto, Sonfonia, and Kagbelen. EDG technical teams are currently conducting inspections to ensure no further equipment damage occurred before restoring service.

These outages come amid broader concerns regarding the reliability of Guinea's national electricity provider. Observers have noted that recurring power failures, particularly during the rainy season, pose challenges to domestic stability and industrial growth. EDG, which is wholly state-owned, manages the country's hydroelectric and thermal energy production and distribution.
