CONAP addresses reports of dead toucans in Tikal National Park
The National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) in Guatemala has addressed viral social media reports claiming multiple dead toucans were found in the Petén region and Tikal National Park. Authorities clarified that some of the circulating images are actually generated by Artificial Intelligence.
While CONAP could not confirm the veracity of all images, they did confirm that two toucans were transferred to the Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS) last week for medical attention. Both specimens died, and necropsies are being conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Officials stated that there is currently no confirmed evidence to attribute these deaths to a lack of water, despite claims circulating online.
CONAP has urged the public not to intervene with wildlife and requested that any actual findings of dead animals be reported directly to park administration for investigation.
