Concacaf has officially announced a major restructuring of the Gold Cup tournament format starting with the 2027 edition. The regional football governing body will replace the traditional structure of four groups of four teams with two large groups of eight teams each.
Under this new system, the 16 participating nations will play four group stage matches against four different opponents, an increase from the three matches played in previous editions. Teams will be organized into four ranking bands within their groups to ensure a balanced schedule via a predetermined match matrix. The top four teams from each group will advance to a single-match knockout phase consisting of quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final.
The tournament is scheduled to run from June 17 to July 11, 2027, with the official draw set for April 8, 2027. Qualification for the 16 spots will include 15 Concacaf member associations through the Nations League and preliminary rounds, while Saudi Arabia will participate as a guest nation.
