Concarneau to host maritime tribute for sailor Charlie Dalin
A large-scale maritime tribute will be held in Concarneau on September 15, 2026, to honor the memory of sailor Charlie Dalin. Dalin, the winner of the 2024-2025 Vendée Globe, passed away on June 10 following a private battle with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) cancer.
Organized in accordance with Dalin’s wishes, the event is designed as a joyful celebration of the sea rather than a somber memorial, with a specific focus on inspiring children. The program includes a spectacular maritime parade starting at 4:00 PM in the Bay of Concarneau, featuring dozens of vessels from various disciplines, including Ultim, IMOCA, Figaro, Class 40, and Mini 6.50 boats. The fleet will be escorted by the French Navy, the SNSM, and the Abeille Bretagne.
In a departure from traditional mourning customs, the event will feature a ‘minute of noise’ where foghorns, sirens, and applause will replace a minute of silence. Other planned activities include a musical barge, fireworks, and an art project created with local schoolchildren.
