Concepción celebrates 476 years with community festival

The city of Concepción, Chile, is celebrating its 476th anniversary. Founded by Pedro de Valdivia on October 5, 1550, the city has a long history, including a relocation following a major earthquake and tsunami in 1751.

To commemorate the milestone, a large public event titled ‘Chile se celebra en Barrio Norte’ will take place this Sunday, October 4, at Parque Laguna Lo Galindo. The festivities, which run from 12:00 to 20:30, will feature a musical performance by Leo Rey, folklore groups, children's shows, and traditional Chilean activities such as cueca competitions and kite flying. The event will also host over 160 local entrepreneurs and various food trucks.

Mayor Héctor Muñoz highlighted the city's historical identity and its importance to the Biobío Region. While celebrating, Muñoz also addressed regional challenges, including the need to combat centralism and the importance of developing urban projects like the local market and public spaces to strengthen the city's presence in southern Chile.
