Concepción, Chile residents call for state intervention to improve security

Residents of the Barrio Brasil neighbourhood in Concepción sent an open letter to Public Security Minister Martín Arrau after a homicide on 2 July at the Vicuña Mackenna‑Colo Colo intersection. The community says insecurity has worsened for years, citing public alcohol and drug use, illegal street racing, shootings, fireworks, illicit commerce and drug‑related crimes. They criticize police actions as reactive rather than preventive and note a series of past killings, including a 2017 pub murder, a 2022 DJ killing, a triple homicide the same year and the recent July incident. The letter stresses the impact on residents’ mental health and freedom, describing life in the area as “being held hostage in our own homes.” Local leaders have met with mayor Héctor Muñoz but say no effective response has been offered.

The neighbourhood’s Junta de Vecinos N.º 14 Diego Portales urges immediate state action to restore safety and restore quality of life for the roughly 3 000 families living in the historic sector.
