Concepción urban densification raises sunlight access concerns

In Concepción, Chile, the ongoing process of urban densification is raising significant environmental and quality-of-life concerns. Researcher Maureen Trebilcock of CEDEUS argues that discussions regarding updates to the Communal Regulatory Plan must move beyond building height limits to address essential environmental factors.

A primary concern is the ‘right to sunlight.’ As high-rise buildings increase, they cast shadows over existing structures and public spaces. This loss of direct sunlight, particularly during winter, can lead to lower indoor temperatures, increased heating demands, and higher humidity levels, directly impacting the well-being of residents in lower-height dwellings.
