Concert culture evolves amid social media and digital trends

The evolution of concert culture is being shaped by digital streaming and social media, leading to a rise in both the global scale of live music and changes in attendee behavior. The prevalence of smartphones has created a tension between preserving memories and actively participating in the moment. While recording performances can help preserve experiences, the drive to capture content for social media often results in poor video quality and a focus on online image over the live performance.

Concert-going has also seen the rise of specific fan traditions designed for virality. Examples include The 1975’s practice of bringing fans on stage during the song ‘Robbers’ and Justin Bieber’s ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ tradition. While these moments can foster parasocial relationships, they also serve as significant cultural touchpoints for fans and can be used to spark social or political dialogue.
