Concorde: The legacy of the supersonic passenger jet
On October 24, 2003, the Concorde, the world's most famous supersonic passenger aircraft, completed its final commercial flight. The aircraft flew from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York to London Heathrow, carrying 100 passengers, including celebrities such as Joan Collins and Christie Brinkley.
Developed through a joint venture between the United Kingdom and France, the Concorde first flew its prototype in March 1969 and entered regular passenger service on January 21, 1976. The aircraft was capable of speeds exceeding 2,100 km/h at altitudes of approximately 18 kilometers, allowing it to cross the Atlantic in roughly three hours. A record flight from New York to London was achieved in 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds in 1996.
Despite its technological achievements, the Concorde faced significant challenges, including high operating costs, extreme noise levels during takeoff, and environmental concerns regarding emissions. These factors led several countries, such as India and Malaysia, to ban the aircraft from their airspace. While it remained a symbol of luxury and prestige for nearly three decades, no successor has yet emerged to match its supersonic capabilities.
