Concordia Park in Ponferrada adds new chess area

The Ponferrada City Council has completed the installation of a new chess area in Concordia Park. The space features tables made of recycled rubber and eight individual seats, representing a municipal investment of 2,450.13 euros.

This addition is part of the broader ‘Ponferrada en el Camino, puente al futuro’ Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD). The larger project, which has a total budget of 265,975.13 euros, is funded primarily through European Next Generation EU funds via the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

The park improvements are designed to address climate risks, specifically mitigating high temperatures and managing the effects of Sil River flooding. Completed works include the creation of a climate oasis, water play areas, shade pergolas, the renovation of four drinking fountains, and upgrades to lighting and urban furniture. These enhancements are intended to benefit local residents as well as pilgrims and visitors traveling along the Camino de Santiago.
