Panama authorities dismantle academic fraud network

The Panamanian Prosecutor's Office and National Police have arrested 18 individuals during 'Operation Credentials 2.0' for their alleged involvement in a large-scale academic fraud scheme. The operation included more than 25 simultaneous raids across the provinces of Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Los Santos, Panamá Oeste, and Veraguas.

The investigation was triggered by reports from the Ministry of Education (Meduca) regarding irregularities within the Human Resources Administration System (SIARHE), the official platform used for teacher appointments. Authorities allege the network was responsible for creating and selling falsified academic titles, credits, and diplomas, often using the names of prestigious universities to facilitate illegal entry into the educational system. The group is also suspected of the illegal sale of teaching positions within Meduca.
