Condor biology and conservation requirements

Condors are highly specialized scavengers with unique biological and sensory traits that make them unsuitable for domestic life. As critically endangered animals, they play a vital role in ecosystems by scavenging carrion. Due to their vast space requirements, specific dietary needs, and legal protections under federal and state laws, they are not appropriate as pets.

While vision is their primary method for locating food, condors also possess a sense of smell that serves as a supporting tool. This olfactory ability allows them to detect decomposing carcasses that may be hidden by terrain or forest canopies. Under optimal conditions, they may detect scents from several miles away, though wind, humidity, and temperature significantly influence this range.
