Confindustria Dispositivi Medici proposes green procurement guidelines
Confindustria Dispositivi Medici has released a ten-point recommendation document aimed at guiding Green Public Procurement within the healthcare sector. The initiative seeks to establish clear, gradual, and verifiable ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria for public health spending without compromising clinical safety or treatment efficacy.
According to research by Medtech Europe, the healthcare sector generates approximately 5% of global emissions, with medical devices accounting for 15-25% of those emissions. The association emphasizes that sustainability requirements must be differentiated and evidence-based rather than uniform, acknowledging the vast diversity of the two million different technologies currently on the European market. The goal is to prevent the fragmentation of ESG criteria across different Italian regions and ensure alignment with European standards to avoid increasing administrative burdens on companies.
