Conflict in Iran disrupts global travel and maritime operations
The conflict in Iran is causing significant disruptions to global maritime and aviation sectors. The Florida-based company Villa Vie Residences has suspended operations of its luxury cruise ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, in Cambodia. The company cited skyrocketing fuel costs and regional instability, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, as primary drivers. Monthly fuel costs per cabin have surged from approximately $1,800 to as much as $8,000 in parts of Asia.
In the aviation sector, travelers are shifting destinations to avoid the Middle East. Roberto Alvo, CEO of Latam Airlines, noted a significant increase in European travelers choosing South America due to its distance from the conflict. While major Gulf carriers like Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways have resumed full services, passenger volumes through hubs like Dubai and Doha have not returned to pre-conflict levels. Latam Airlines reported a 10% increase in passengers traveling between Europe and South America compared to the previous year.
