Confsal calls for improved workplace safety measures in Italy

Angelo Raffaele Margiotta, General Secretary of Confsal, has called for a shift toward a shared culture of safety to address the persistent issue of workplace deaths and injuries in Italy. Speaking at the third General Assembly on Health and Safety at Work, Margiotta emphasized that existing regulations, such as Legislative Decree 81/2008, are insufficient without consistent behavior and shared values among institutions, businesses, and workers.

To strengthen prevention, Confsal proposed hiring at least 10,000 technical inspectors and establishing a single oversight hub to eliminate fragmented competencies. The union also advocated for specific protections for safety supervisors, including insurance coverage and risk-based indemnities ranging from 5% to 10%. Margiotta stressed the importance of participatory prevention, involving workers directly in organizational safety models rather than treating safety merely as a regulatory compliance task.
