Confucius' Legacy and Influence on Chinese Civilization
Confucius (551‑479 BCE) was born into a wealthy family in the ancient state of Lu, in present‑day Shandong province. Orphaned early, he was raised by his mother and received a classical education before becoming a teacher.
He later abandoned formal teaching to devote himself to collecting and studying the spiritual heritage of early Chinese civilization. Confucius moved to the imperial capital Luoyang, where he attempted to present his ideas on state and social organization, but his reforms were rejected. He then traveled across the empire with a group of disciples, continuing his scholarly work.
Confucian thought was later adopted as the official doctrine of Chinese society, promoting a strict hierarchical order and moral‑political teachings that shaped governance, family relations, and education for centuries. The core texts attributed to him include the *Book of Songs*, *Book of Changes*, *Book of History*, and others that remain central to East Asian cultural heritage.
