Congo advances major transport and power infrastructure projects

The Democratic Republic of Congo is accelerating two large‑scale infrastructure initiatives. In Kinshasa, Vice‑Prime Minister and Transport Minister Jean‑Pierre Bemba chaired a meeting on July 16, 2026 to coordinate the MetroKin urban rail project, bringing together representatives from the Prime Minister’s office, finance ministries, the provincial government, the national transport agency (ONATRA), MetroKin, financiers and technical experts. Participants reported that feasibility studies are complete, funding is secured and that the next steps involve finalizing contracts and clearing the railway corridor between the central station and N’Djili airport.

Separately, in Kasaï Central, the Fonds de Promotion de l’Industrie (FPI) and the National Agency for Rural and Peri‑urban Electrification (ANSER) signed a contract on July 17, 2026 to develop the Mbombo hydro‑electric plant on the Lulua River near Kananga. The 20 MW project, managed by the new HYDRO MBOMBO SAS, aims to raise local electrification from below 1 % to a stable supply for households, artisans and industry, with construction slated to begin soon and first megawatt expected within two years.
