Congolese literature featured in curated list of 12 notable books

A new literary roundup released on July 31, 2026 highlights twelve works that illustrate the depth and diversity of Congolese writing. The selection spans fiction, graphic memoir and historical narrative, emphasizing themes such as colonial legacy, dictatorship, migration, memory and everyday resilience.

Among the highlighted titles are Alain Mabanckou’s political satire *Dealing with the Dead*, Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s portrait of Mobutu‑era Zaire in *The Villain’s Dance*, Blaise Ndala’s historical novel *In the Belly of the Congo*, and Barly Baruti’s graphic novel *Chaos in Kinshasa*. The list also includes *The Smallest Ones*, a harrowing account of survival during the early‑2000s conflict, and *Ground*, a novel that opens with a fire in an Italian countryside house. The compilation coincides with the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s National Day of Remembrance on August 2, marking the memory of millions lost to decades of resource‑driven conflict.
