Congolese prosecutor André Oko Gakala detained in Kinshasa

André Oko Gakala, a prosecutor for the Republic of the Congo, was reportedly detained and mistreated by police in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The incident occurred during a tenancy dispute involving a property owned by his wife.

According to reports, the situation escalated after police identified Mr. Oko Gakala as a high-ranking magistrate from the neighboring Republic of the Congo. Witnesses allege that the prosecutor was subjected to violence, threats, and was forcibly taken into custody. Audio recordings circulating on social media reportedly contain threats referencing the unresolved disappearance of Congolese military personnel in Makotimpoko.

Mr. Oko Gakala was released following the intervention of the Republic of the Congo's embassy in the DRC. The incident has raised concerns regarding the treatment of foreign officials and could potentially strain diplomatic relations between the two Congo nations, particularly as Brazzaville seeks clarity on separate security matters involving missing soldiers.
