Congolese refugees face crisis in Burundi as residents return to Ituri

Congolese refugees in the Busuma camp in Burundi are facing severe humanitarian crises, reporting inadequate food, lack of shelter, and insufficient financial assistance. Some refugees have expressed a desire to return to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) despite ongoing conflict, stating they would rather face the risks of war than endure starvation and cold in the camp.

Burundian diplomacy chief Edouard Bizimana, following a visit to the camp, urged patience, noting that security concerns prevent immediate repatriation to active conflict zones. He emphasized that the Burundian government supports peace in the DRC.

In the Ituri province of the DRC, a gradual return of residents to the Bule area has begun following months of displacement caused by clashes between the FARDC and the Convention pour la révolution populaire (CRP) militia. Over 50,000 displaced persons had been living near the Plaine Savo site. While MONUSCO has increased patrols to protect civilians during this return, many residents face destroyed homes, looted property, and the lingering threat of explosive devices.
