Congonhas, Brazil completes major drainage works to curb flooding
The municipal government of Congonhas finished a series of drainage projects in the Zé Arigó, Jardim Profeta and Alvorada neighborhoods, extending the earlier "Caminho das Águas" plan with a second phase called Caminho das Águas 2. New concrete pipes, capture grids and surface drainage were installed to increase the capacity of the storm‑water network after severe flooding on 23 February 2026.
City officials highlighted that the upgraded system now handles rainwater and spring runoff more effectively, reducing the risk of homes being inundated. At the same time, municipal authorities warned that improper connections between the storm‑water and sewage networks, along with illegal solid‑waste dumping, are causing sewage overflows. In the first half of 2026, about 5,500 service orders were logged for blockages, a 20 % rise from the previous year, underscoring the need for correct waste disposal to protect public health and the environment.
