Congress accuses PM Modi of ‘calibrated capitulation’ to China
Following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit, the Congress party has accused the central government of ‘calibrated capitulation’ regarding China.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh raised four specific questions concerning India's handling of border tensions. He questioned whether the Prime Minister's 2020 remarks—stating that no Chinese troops had entered Indian territory following the Galwan Valley clashes—weakened India's negotiating position. Ramesh also alleged that India has allowed China to gain territorial advantages in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, noting the loss of traditional patrolling and grazing rights in eastern Ladakh.
Further concerns were raised regarding China's activities in Arunachal Pradesh, including the renaming of towns and the advancement of the 60,000-MW Medog mega-dam project on the Brahmaputra River, which could impact water security in Northeast India. Additionally, former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid demanded greater transparency from the government regarding the specific outcomes and roadmaps discussed during the high-level engagement between Modi and Xi.
In contrast, the Ministry of External Affairs reported that both leaders welcomed ‘steady progress’ in bilateral ties and agreed that differences should be managed strategically to prevent them from escalating into disputes.
