Congress and TMC dismiss merger talks as opposition seeks unity in India

Speeches and meetings within the INDIA opposition bloc in Delhi sparked speculation that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) might re‑merge with the Indian National Congress. Sources said TMC leader Mamata Banerjee emphasized the need for a united front against the BJP, but both TMC and Congress publicly rejected any merger proposal, stating that any such move must originate from TMC itself.

The discussions occurred amid a growing internal crisis in TMC following its defeat in the West Bengal assembly elections, with dozens of members resigning or defecting to the BJP‑led NDA. Despite the turmoil, the opposition continues to coordinate on common issues, while the parties maintain separate identities.

The meetings also included talks between Rahul and Sonia Gandhi with TMC officials, but no concrete agreement on a party merger emerged.
