Congress criticizes BJP over planned lamp-lighting celebrations
Congress spokesperson Abhay Dubey has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding planned celebrations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The controversy centers on a proposed ‘Deepotsav’ involving the lighting of approximately 100 crore lamps.
Dubey pointed out a contradiction between the Prime Minister’s previous appeal to citizens to reduce edible oil consumption by 10 percent and the massive oil requirements for the celebration. He estimated that lighting 100 crore lamps would require roughly 1.5 crore liters of oil, costing approximately 225 crore rupees at current rates. Additionally, he noted that such an event could result in an emission of about 39,000 tons of carbon dioxide.
Furthermore, the Congress leader urged the BJP leadership, including newly appointed national president Nitin Nabin, to show more sensitivity toward disaster victims. He suggested that resources should be redirected toward helping those affected by floods in Bihar and recent tragedies in Madhya Pradesh rather than being used for large-scale festivities.
