India-China border tensions spark political outcry in New Delhi

The Congress party has accused the Narendra Modi government of maintaining a “deafening silence” regarding ongoing face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh. The political criticism follows remarks by Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujit Kapoor, who noted that confrontations with the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have been ongoing since July.

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh raised concerns over whether Indian troops have lost access to traditional patrolling points, specifically citing reports of incursions near Taksing. They also highlighted threats to ecological and water security posed by China’s construction of a 60,000-MW dam and the renaming of locations in Arunachal Pradesh.

Beyond border security, the opposition flagged India’s growing economic dependence on China. They noted that the bilateral trade deficit reached a record $112 billion in the 2025–26 fiscal year, up from $99 billion the previous year, arguing that rising imports are harming Indian MSMEs.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded by stating that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is periodically disturbed when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns. The MEA emphasized that both nations are using diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve issues and avoid miscalculation.
