Congress demands CEC resignation and parliamentary dialogue on delimitation

The Congress party has called on the central government to formally prorogue both Houses of Parliament and initiate an all-party dialogue regarding the issue of delimitation. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh noted that the gap since the Monsoon session was adjourned sine die on August 13 has exceeded previous records.

As a prerequisite for meaningful negotiations, the opposition is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Ramesh alleged that the government's attempts to secure a two-thirds majority to pass delimitation-related bills failed in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026, due to opposition unity and resistance from certain NDA allies.

The party further urged the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to restore public trust in the electoral system, which they claim has been subverted.
