Congress demands probe into BJP candidate qualifications in Silchar

The Silchar district Congress has requested an investigation by the State Election Commission into the educational qualification certificates of 13 BJP candidates contesting the upcoming Silchar civic polls. The party has raised concerns regarding the eligibility of candidates in 13 specific wards, citing the criteria established by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2019.

In addition to the eligibility disputes, the Congress has criticized the BJP-led municipal board for significant increases in civic taxes and fees. Specifically, leaders alleged that water taxes rose from Rs 75 to Rs 300 and trade license fees increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,500.
