Congress investigates USPS service failures in St. Louis

Congressional oversight officials and Postmaster General David Steiner toured a major mail processing facility in St. Louis on Friday as part of an intensifying investigation into United States Postal Service (USPS) failures. The review follows years of complaints from Missouri residents regarding delayed mail, including missing packages, medications, paychecks, and election-related ballots.

House Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Pete Sessions and U.S. Representative Ann Wagner participated in the tour of the St. Louis Processing Center. The investigation aims to determine why service issues persist despite previous audits and corrective recommendations. Previous reviews by the USPS Office of Inspector General have documented significant operational problems across several delivery units in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

In addition to service failures, Senator Josh Hawley is pressing the Postmaster General regarding executive compensation. Hawley has called for the return of bonus payments and is supporting legislation to restrict postal executive bonuses until service standards improve. The Senator noted that his office has yet to receive requested documents related to the ongoing investigation into USPS operations and the use of external consultants.
