Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam summoned by Delhi Police over JNU harassment probe
Delhi Police have served a formal notice to Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, directing him to join an investigation into sexual harassment allegations. The allegations were brought forward by 11 female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where Akoijam previously served as a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems.
Following an inquiry by the university’s Internal Committee, JNU dismissed Akoijam. The dismissal order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit, recommended major punishment based on the inquiry's findings. Akoijam has contested the dismissal, describing it as a ‘witch hunt’ and alleging procedural lapses, media leaks, and violations of statutory rules. He has also challenged the claims that he sought sexual favors in exchange for marks.
The situation has sparked political and student activity. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at the JNU main gate, questioning the Congress party’s silence regarding the dismissal. Additionally, a delegation of BJP leaders met with the National Commission for Women (NCW) to seek action and ensure student safety. NCW chairperson Vijaya K Rahatkar has assured that the commission will look into the matter.
