Jamia Millia Islamia: MPs detained during student union protests

Protests at Jamia Millia Islamia university over the restoration of the student union have led to the detention of two Members of Parliament. Congress MP Imran Masood was detained by Delhi Police after meeting with students who have been protesting and on hunger strike for 12 days. Masood addressed controversial posters on campus, stating that no “free Kashmir” slogans were raised by the protesters and affirming that “Kashmir is an integral part of India.” He suggested that such posters were an attempt to undermine the legitimate student movement.

Samajwadi Party MP Mohibullah Nadvi was also detained by police while attempting to support the students. Nadvi, an alumnus of the university, reported being pushed by police during the encounter.

The university administration has formed a seven-member high-level committee to examine student demands and restore normalcy. Meanwhile, officials have begun identifying individuals responsible for writing controversial slogans on campus walls, including messages directed at the Vice-Chancellor.
