Congress MP KC Venugopal Moves Privilege Motion Against Union Minister Jitendra Singh Over Alleged Firing Lie
On July 31, Congress Lok Sabha member K. C. Venugopal submitted a motion under parliamentary privilege against Union Minister Jitendra Singh. Venugopal alleged that Singh deliberately misled the House by claiming no firing occurred during the July 20 student protest in Delhi, while video evidence and medical reports show a pellet‑gun injury.
Venugopal urged Speaker Om Birla to initiate proceedings under Rules 222 and 223, requesting that the matter be referred to the Privileges Committee for investigation. The motion follows a recent notice against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and reflects heightened parliamentary scrutiny of the government's handling of the protest.
If upheld, the motion could lead to sanctions against the minister for contempt of the Lok Sabha, marking a rare challenge to a central government official within the lower house.
