Congress questions Tata Power nuclear project clearance in Rewa
The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has raised concerns regarding the approval of preliminary drilling for a proposed Tata Power nuclear energy project in the Rewa district. Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar alleged that a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was issued despite the Gram Sabha (village assembly) unanimously rejecting permission for drilling on September 3.
Singhar claimed that while the Gram Panchayat informed the District Collector of the rejection on September 5, an NOC was subsequently issued on September 23, citing a different consent letter dated September 4. He has demanded an investigation into the authenticity of this document and the immediate cancellation of the NOC.
The proposed project involves the installation of two 220-megawatt nuclear power units. Local residents, including tribal families, small farmers, and agricultural laborers, are protesting the development due to concerns regarding safety, water availability, environmental impact, and threats to their livelihoods. Singhar has called for the government to disclose environmental impact assessments, seismic risk studies, and disaster management plans.
