Congressman Adriano Espaillat Secures $12.5 M for First Dominican Cultural Center in Upper Manhattan

U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat has driven the establishment of the Dominican Center for the Arts and Culture in Upper Manhattan, marking the first permanent institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the Dominican diaspora in New York. The project was unveiled at the CUNY Institute of Dominican Studies and is backed by an initial $12.5 million investment announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, with total funding exceeding $40 million secured through the congressman’s efforts. The center will house exhibitions, historical archives, educational programs, artistic performances and research initiatives focused on the Dominican community’s contributions to the United States, including early immigrants, military service members and cultural figures. It aims to document overlooked stories such as those of Dominican veterans in the U.S. Armed Forces and the first immigrant Juan Rodríguez, while providing resources for future generations to explore their heritage.
