CONICET researchers develop rapid dengue diagnostic test
Researchers at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Rosario (IBR, CONICET-UNR) are developing a rapid, low-cost diagnostic test to detect the dengue virus during its initial stages. Led by investigator Elisa Bolatti, the project aims to provide an accessible alternative to highly sensitive but resource-intensive methods like PCR, which require specialized infrastructure and trained personnel.
The test targets the NS1 protein, a viral marker that circulates in high concentrations during the first days of infection and remains consistent across all four dengue serotypes. A key innovation of this development is the use of synthetic aptamers as molecular sensors instead of traditional animal antibodies. These lab-designed molecules offer high precision, greater stability, and lower production costs, making them suitable for mass manufacturing.
By enabling point-of-care testing, the tool is intended for use in emergency rooms, primary care centers, and field operations. This approach seeks to decentralize diagnostics, improve clinical management, and strengthen epidemiological surveillance during outbreaks. The project has recently received support from the Williams Foundation.
