CONICET researchers warn of funding cuts and wage losses in Argentina
Researchers at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) in Argentina are reporting significant operational challenges due to budget restrictions. In the Salta-Jujuy region, Director Raúl Alberto Becchio noted that reduced funding is hindering the purchase of supplies, equipment, and the ability to conduct essential field research in disciplines such as geology, biology, and archaeology.
Across the country, including in Tandil, scientists are facing a substantial loss in purchasing power, with estimated salary decreases ranging between 30% and 40%. Experts such as Alejandro Zunino have highlighted a lack of financing from the National Agency for the Promotion of Research, Technological Development, and Innovation, which is critical for large-scale projects.
To sustain activities, some research teams are turning to technical assistance agreements and private sector partnerships. However, officials warn that these measures cannot replace the general state funding required to maintain scientific continuity and institutional stability within both CONICET and national universities.
