Colombia earthquake kills hundreds and triggers national emergency FAST-MOVING

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, causing widespread devastation across the departments of Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, and Caldas. The disaster has resulted in a tragic death toll, with official reports from the UNGRD citing at least 239 to 265 fatalities and thousands of injuries. Hundreds of people remain missing as search and rescue operations enter a critical phase.

Infrastructure damage is extensive, with over 11,000 homes destroyed and hundreds of buildings, schools, and hospitals collapsed. Major transportation hubs, including the Matecaña International Airport in Pereira, have faced significant damage and operational suspensions. The earthquake also impacted essential services, including water and electricity, in many affected municipalities.

In response, President Abelardo De la Espriella has declared a national disaster and an economic and social emergency to facilitate reconstruction through the newly created 'Fondo Milagro'. The government has also decreed three days of national mourning. International aid is mobilizing, with the United States providing $15.5 million in assistance, Mexico sending humanitarian supplies and rescue specialists, and Conmebol and the FCF donating $1 million for reconstruction efforts.
