Conmebol considers adding Liga MX and MLS teams to Copa Libertadores

Conmebol is analyzing a historical modification to the Copa Libertadores format that could include four teams from Concacaf. The proposal aims to add two clubs from Mexico's Liga MX and two from the United States' Major League Soccer (MLS) to expand the tournament's commercial and sporting reach beyond South America.

Under the proposed scheme, one slot per country would be granted via direct invitation from the organization, while the second would be determined by sporting merit based on league performance. This strategy is intended to strengthen the Libertadores brand in high-value markets like Mexico and the United States.

The initiative is currently in the analysis phase and requires agreement from Concacaf. If approved, the integration could potentially begin with the 2027 edition. Mexican clubs have not participated in the tournament since 2016 due to scheduling conflicts and the priority of the Concacaf Champions League.
