Conmebol fines Flamengo and Leonardo Jardim over Libertadores delay
Conmebol has issued financial penalties to the Brazilian club Flamengo and its coach, Leonardo Jardim, following a delay in the second-half restart during a Copa Libertadores quarter-final match against Independiente del Valle. The incident occurred on September 10 at the Atahualpa Stadium in Quito, Ecuador.
Flamengo has been fined approximately $60,000 (R$ 304,000), while Leonardo Jardim faces a fine of $40,000 (R$ 206,000). If the club's appeal is unsuccessful, these amounts will be deducted from the revenue Flamengo receives from broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and tournament prizes.
In addition to the delay, Flamengo received a warning regarding post-match procedures. The club failed to follow regulations concerning the mixed zone and flash interviews, opting to take players directly to interviews due to the distance between the locker rooms and the media area. Despite these disciplinary issues, Flamengo advanced to the semifinals of the competition to face Argentina's Estudiantes.
