Conmebol funds at risk amid Paraguayan banking crisis

The banking crisis in Paraguay has impacted the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) following the intervention of Ueno Bank by the Central Bank of Paraguay due to solvency issues. Reports indicate that Conmebol has between 13 million and 14.3 million dollars deposited in the institution.

Conmebol stated that the frozen funds represent approximately 2.3 to 2.5 percent of its annual revenue, asserting that the amount does not compromise the organization's operational capacity or its ability to pay tournament prize money. The confederation confirmed that the schedules for the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana finals will proceed as planned.

While the continental organization remains stable, the crisis has significantly affected local Paraguayan football. The players' union, Futbolistas Asociados del Paraguay, reported that many players have had their salaries blocked. Ueno Bank had previously established a strong presence in the local league, sponsoring major clubs such as Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, Guaraní, Sportivo Luqueño, and Rubio Ñu.
