Conmebol President suggests Lionel Messi should play in Copa Libertadores

Conmebol President Alejandro Domínguez has publicly expressed interest in seeing Lionel Messi compete in the Copa Libertadores. Domínguez described the continental tournament as a ‘pending task’ in the Argentine striker’s illustrious career, noting its unique prestige and high level of demand.

Regarding a potential return to Argentine football, Domínguez specifically mentioned Newell’s Old Boys, the club where Messi began his formative years. He noted that while the player’s heart may remain with the Rosario-based institution, any such move would depend on the club’s leadership and the player's own intentions. A critical sporting requirement for this to occur is that Newell’s Old Boys must qualify for the Copa Libertadores through official AFA competitions.
