Connected Cars' Data Use Consumes Trillions of Liters of Water Daily

Connected cars generate 25‑40 GB of data per day; each gigabyte requires about 200 L of water for data‑center operations, meaning a single vehicle uses 5,000‑8,000 L of water daily.

If half of the 1.644 billion vehicles worldwide were connected, the indirect water use would reach roughly 5.3 trillion L per day – about 0.05 % of global freshwater extraction, equivalent to more than two million Olympic‑size swimming pools.

Privacy experts warn that the same sensors collect extensive personal information. A Mozilla Foundation review of 25 car brands gave all a “Privacy not included” rating, noting that vehicles can record routes, biometric data, health indicators and even intimate habits.

The findings highlight both the hidden environmental cost of the digital ecosystem and the growing privacy risks associated with increasingly connected automobiles.
