Connected vehicle technology raises security and entertainment concerns

The increasing connectivity of modern vehicles is presenting both new opportunities for entertainment and significant security risks. Google is expanding its Android Automotive OS to include more multimedia features, such as web browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Vivaldi, as well as streaming services like Starz and JioHotstar. To ensure driver safety, these entertainment functions are designed to be accessible only when the vehicle is parked.

Conversely, the integration of mobile applications into vehicle systems has created vulnerabilities for stalking and harassment. In one reported case, an American woman was targeted by her ex-husband, who used a connected BMW app to remotely open her windows during rain, activate the ignition, and track her location. Despite presenting ownership documents and police records to an authorized dealer, the woman was reportedly unable to have the ex-husband’s access revoked through the manufacturer, eventually leading her to sell the vehicle.
